We are Styrmir Kári & Heiðdís, a husband and wife team that have, somehow over the years, become experts at creating art out of the memories of lovers traveling to Iceland.
We shoot destination weddings, elopements and couple shoots in the breathtaking Icelandic landscapes. Coming from both a photojournalist and an editorial background we merge together our search for the truth with a beautiful aesthetic, creating honest yet poetic images for our couples.
Our style of shooting is unobtrusive and relaxed. We show up to each wedding with a clean slate and try not to have any preconceived ideas on how we want the day to go but rather shoot the scenes unfolding in front of our eyes. Resulting in natural and honest images, unique to each couple. It’s also as much about the experience as it is about the images so being friendly and eagerly saying yes to crazy ideas is important to us.
Our biggest inspiration when it comes to our photography is Iceland itself, with it’s beautiful, raw landscapes and the ever changing weather constantly changing how the light falls on a scene, creating endless possibilities for play.
When asked what our favourite locations in Iceland are, our go to answer is always the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It’s like a miniature version of the rest of the island with incredibly diverse landscapes in a relatively small area. There is also something about the mood up there that really resonates with us. And having spent so much time there many of the locals have become friends.
But this isn’t all about epic landscapes and bravely facing the elements. There is a deeper meaning and purpose with our work and it’s the reason we keep doing it. We are constantly meeting inspiring people from every corner of the earth on one of the happiest days of their lives and we make something tangible out of their memories. At first they are just beautiful images that take you back to this day, but as time passes their value increases exponentially.
Ever since we worked with Pink Iceland for the first time in 2015 we have looked at them as our partners and friends through what now has become a career for us. Supporting and learning from each other along the way, one adventure filled love story at a time.
Through them we have learned some vital skills for the wedding industry, for example how to use glacier crampons and ice axes, how to persuade ageing grandmothers to climb steep cliffs, how to open a bottle of Prosecco in below freezing temperatures and how to keep donuts from getting soggy when sitting outside in torrential rain storms. All necessary information that comes in handy during a wedding day in Iceland.
In return we have shown them countless sketchy roads to far flung locations with breathtaking views, taught them how to make a herd of horses do your bidding and made them appreciate the amazing photogenic qualities of bad weather.
Time and time again we have found out the importance of having a good team of people around you during your adventurous wedding. When the zipper on your dress decides it’s time to retire an hour before your wedding ceremony it’s good to know that you have a diverse team consisting of a make up artist, wedding planner, photographer and a videographer that are willing to drop everything and fix it for you. It also comes in handy when you need to corral a group of ten strong Colombians to help push a truck up a snowy hill or herd a bus load of tourists out of frame for the perfect shot at the black sand beach.
